Field operations are potentially hazardous. This page lists common hazards and options for dealing with them. (Hazards that are specific to particular activities may also be listed in the relevant topics).

**Please make safety a priority when you are carrying out any work at a site. We recommend that you perform a site-specific risk assessment to identify any potential risks before commencing any work at a site.**

# Environmental Hazards

Hazards related to working outdoors

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Extreme weather**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Be aware of expected weather conditions and wear suitable clothing
> ℹ️ - In hot weather, take sunscreen and adequate drinking water. Watch your companions for signs of dehydration.
> ℹ️ - In cold weather, wear warm clothing and carry chains for vehicles.

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Traffic**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Take care when exiting your vehicle and when working near traffic.
> ℹ️ - If necessary, erect warning signs or bollards.
> ℹ️ - Ensure that your vehicle is not a hazard to other vehicles.

# Site Hazards

Hazards that apply when working in remote or rural areas or around water.

> ℹ️ - Observe local fire restrictions. Obtain a hot works permit if applicable.
> ℹ️ - Inspect heating equipment regularly and ensure that it meets an appropriate standard. If you are using a blow torch and gas bottles, make sure they are serviceable and fit for purpose.
> ℹ️ - Ensure that flammable materials are safely stored.
> ℹ️ - Keep the work area clear of flammable material.
> ℹ️ - Carry a fire extinguisher.

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Slippery surfaces and trip hazards**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Wear slip resistant footwear
> ℹ️ - Keep access ways clear

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Dangerous animals and livestock**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - If there is livestock in the area, barricade off the work area or have livestock moved.
> ℹ️ - Watch out for snakes and biting insects when lifting equipment or removing covers.
> ℹ️ - Carry a first aid kit
> ℹ️ - Carry an EpiPen in the case of allergies.

# Work Hazards

Hazards that apply to working with machinery and power tools or with heavy equipment.

> ℹ️ - Used approved manual lifting procedures
> ℹ️ - Use suitable lifting gear and mechanical aids for heavy loads
> ℹ️ - Do not work alone

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Power tools and electrical equipment**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Secure loose clothing and long hair
> ℹ️ - Ensure safety guards are fitted
> ℹ️ - Wear appropriate safety gear such as goggles, earmuffs, and respirator

> ℹ️ - Watch for pinch points when moving or adjusting equipment.
> ℹ️ - Use a pry bar where appropriate

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Sharp objects**

> ℹ️ Wear protective clothing, boots and gloves when handling sharp objects and objects with rough surfaces, burrs and sharp edges
