# What is the SmartFront Sensor?

The Rubicon SmartFront is a surface irrigation water-front sensor. It consists of a measurement chamber and a level sensor to measure water level, and it uses a Rubicon FerIT® Node for data communication.

The SmartFront precisely senses the advancing water-front and calculates surface water depth. Using the SmartFront’s sensor data, along with data from other Rubicon on-farm devices, the precise irrigation cut-off point can be dynamically calculated. This data can then be used to support “Event Control” by triggering the system to close automated bay gates and valves and to prevent over or under-watering. The device can also be used to determine infiltration rates to support a smarter watering system.
